TV viewing habits

by Mumonthebrink 1 Comment

When the TV breaks it can change habits very quickly…Not that we watch TV much, but it is on quite often, in the background.

Recently our TV broke.  After research and search we decided to buy another one.  No, it wasn’t an obvious choice to buy another one as we did consider going without one… for a brief moment or two.  We decided on a different brand, a brand that had served us very well in the past- the new TV was to be a Samsung. (The one that broke was an LG)

I found the model I wanted, at a good price.  We went to the local retailer and bought it.

Dadonthebrink carried it home and set it up.  Being a typical man, and not his typical self at the time, he jumped straight in by plugging cables in, connecting this with that, that with this and switching it on.  In this process and due to the way the TV is configured, i.e. you need a certain order to set things up, we couldn’t tune channels on the TV.

For weeks we were stuck with a TV that only showed live TV if it was through the PVR.  Now, the remote for the PVR is really temperamental, so we don’t often use it.  Hence we hadn’t seen live TV for a good couple of weeks now.

Instead, the smart TV function and WiFi connectivity gave us access to digital, streamed content through YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

It has be very interesting to see how our viewing habits changed over the past weeks:

1, The TV was on a LOT less.  It almost never went on in the mornings, when the kids would usually have vegged in front of it to fill the time between breakfast and school.

2, When we watched TV, we watched it for longer and more attentively: I have appreciated Netflix series so much.  We’ve watch some great shows recently- for me it was the House of Cards, for the kids it was the serialisation of How to train your dragon and most recently Mako Mermaids.

3, We have watched more content- mainly films and documentaries- together as a family.

4, I have watched more YouTube content than ever before and very different content than I’d watch previously on my phone or even laptop.  I have watched longer videos, actually preferring them to my normally favoured 90 second clips.

5, Time, or more like the lack of it, and inertia stopped us from amending the set up error and adding the digital channels directly to the TV.  We needed to download instructions.  It was not happening quickly

…till we needed to watch something live.  The Great British Bake Off was starting!  We had to see that live!  😀

Dadonthebrink was kindly asked to set up the TV again.  After a bit of fidgeting with the settings, he managed!  We now have live TV again.

As the night closes in, I wonder whether our TV viewing habits will revert to the old ones of lots of TV but little attention paid.

Do you have the TV on a lot?

Live? On-demand?
