Friday Footprint Challenge: my half a pig

by Mumonthebrink Leave a Comment

Half a pig Oxford friday footprint challenge

In my continued quest to reduce our food miles, and thereby our food footprint, I bought half a pig. The lovely farmer kept to his word and called back when he had had the gilt (girl pig) slaughtered.  We agreed a price per kilo that is a slight premium over what I pay at the supermarket  and a butchering cost of £25. It was a cost I was willing to bear for this … [Read more...] about Friday Footprint Challenge: my half a pig

Friday footprint challenge: progress with buying local

Meat at the covered market in Oxford

Taking baby steps has worked! This week we've stuck to buying British for our meat and veg. I even managed to pop into the fabulous Covered Market in Oxford town center where I got a pretty good selection of meats: Pork chops, chicken wings and chicken drums and thighs. The 3 packs for £6. This worked out to just a slither more expensive than my usual supermarket … [Read more...] about Friday footprint challenge: progress with buying local

This morning started with a short stint on the radio for me. BBC Oxford got in touch last night whether I'd be willing to give my opinion on The Earth Trust's new initiative "Our Footprint" which is looking to address the phenomenal 6,500 food miles our humble Sunday roast can travel before it ends up on our plate. “We’re asking people to take part in our Friday Footprint … [Read more...] about Friday footprint challenge: buy local

How ironic is it that on a day all about the electric revolution I have few pictures to show because both my windowsphone and Dadonthebrink's iPhone have let us down?  Both our batteries died early on during the first day of Formula E. Nonetheless we had a memorable day.  On the public testing days access is free to the Donnington Park circuit, you just need to register. … [Read more...] about The first Formula E test day- was it what we expected?

Central heating configured for savings

by Mumonthebrink 1 Comment

We live in a very cold house.  An early 1900s, single skin brick wall construction house.  When we moved here I didn't quite realise the problems such a house poses for damp, mould and heating costs. I am of the ilk who bends the house, or at least tries to, to our lifestyle instead of the other way around. As part of our refurbishment a couple of years ago I … [Read more...] about Central heating configured for savings
