My blog and vlog camera

by Mumonthebrink 3 Comments

The effects of information overload are evident in how blogs are evolving. Posts with great images are winning over the wordy ones, blogs with pleasing visuals are conquering even some well-written ones.

In blogger forums one of the most common questions that crops up again and again:

I’m looking to upgrade my camera, what do people use?  What do you recommend?

We, blogger, are constantly on the lookout for affordable, good imaging systems that will enhance the content we are creating. Pictures are important and video is becoming more and more important too.

Do I need anything other than my phone? – You may ask.

There is a school of thought that suggests mobile phones, especially the high-end ones, create perfectly suitable blog pictures and videos.

This is true!

On a recent trip to Amsterdam, we only took my N1020 and Dadonthebrink’s iPhone 5. On our return I asked a friend, a professional videographer, to help edit the footage.  He was quite impressed, saying that you wouldn’t know the footage was taken with mobile phones.

However, if you are anything like me, you have a couple of hundred pictures at the end of a day out and a fair few video snippets too.  With all the other demands on the phone- social media activity you just cannot do without, GPS for getting around and so on- that battery doesn’t last for long, does it?

A separate camera makes sense!

I swing back and forth between my phone, a small pocket sized camera and a larger bridge camera.  Over the past 3 years we’ve had a couple and have had more luck with some than others.  My journey has been a rocky one:

My Panasonic FZ72 stopped working just as it came out of the warranty period. No warning, just died.

I bought a Samsung WB250F, which was so flimsy, that a knock, when it was just 3 months old, killed it.

At the moment I am using my Nokia 1020 most of the time, but have just bought a small Canon point and shoot.  I loved having the Legria Mini and I also borrowed a Canon SX 60 HS for a couple of weeks.  I am in the process of looking for something that will make great photos in spite of me.

So I thought I’d ask others about their cameras and how they use them.

Next week  we hear from Mary who blogs at Over 40 and a Mum to One

What’s your blog/ vlog camera? Do you love it?

I usually use my phone for video and photos because it’s invariably the camera that I have with me. However when I have time to plan filming ot shooting something I definitely get better results with seperate devices. For video I am still using the little handheld Panasonic camera that we got at that first Panasonic event. For photos I have commandeered my husband’s Fuji x100, which takes the most gorgeous photos. It takes a bit of getting used to, but even I can get nice shots out of it in auto mode.

Very interesting! Ruth, I’d love you share your choice in more detail. Would you?
