A couple of days ago The Microsoft Apartment hosted an exciting panel discussion with music leaders from Deezer, the Music Managers’ Forum (MMF) and the Featured Artists’ Coalition (FAC), as well as artist Nate James, to talk about how Microsoft is driving change in the creation and consumption of music. We even had David Rowntree from Blur attend to join the debate! I was lucky enough to bag an invite as a Loop member.
It turns out, when it comes to creation, Microsoft has a wealth of stand-out music-making apps available on the Windows platform:
o Music Maker Jam – the easiest way to make your own tracks; it’s simple; start the app, choose three free music styles and start combining sounds to make your own songs
o FL Studio Groove – allows you to create professional sounding music in minutes, with the option to lay down percussion and keyboard over the top
o Recording Studio Pro – the perfect way to begin crafting great sounding music productions. You can record up to 24 audio and/or virtual instrument tracks by using your built-in microphone, or by connecting an external microphone
o Sequencer – lets you create beats on your tablet or desktop PC
o Sound Editor – you can record, play and edit files, as well as re-mix existing songs – particularly handy as you can also convert and save files to and from Mp3, WMA and WAV
o – record your music inspirations with Voice Recorder Pro+ whilst you are on the go!
o musiXmatch lyrics player –identify lyrics for music played on TV or radio with Lyrics by musiXmatch anywhere, anytime
o Pocket Recorder™ – this app transforms your Windows Phone into a fully-fledged sound recording and editing tool, designed to allow you to quickly and easily record, process and sync sounds to your Windows device
o Sound Sentry™ – use this app to monitor noise levels wherever you are; this includes full noise monitoring, peak volume, average (mean) volume and noise volume visualisation
o Steinberg Cubase – your go-to audio workstation for recording, editing, mixing and producing music of all types
o FL Studio 11 – everything you need in one package to compose, arrange, record, edit, mix and master professional quality music
o Sony’s Acid Pro 7 – the legendary app that started loop-based music creation, that combines full multitrack recording and mixing, MIDI sequencing, and looping functionality for a seamless studio production environment
o Cakewalk Sonar – create music in any style with cutting-edge instruments, effects, and creative tools
Listening to Nate James modestly speak about how easy songwriting is for him was really inspiring. Although there is no hope for me, I’m now determined to add composing into our summer activities with kids. Watch this space for our efforts. Hopefully it’ll be better than listening to cats being skinned!
I’ll leave you with Nate’s performance.
