As a stay at home mum I miss out on the work Christmas parties. You know the ones where before the event you have a huge headache about what to wear, get to see your colleagues let their hair down, then do something utterly ridiculous and embarrassing …so much so that you hope everyone was too drunk to remember and you actually dread going in the next working day.
As silly as it sounds, however much I used to dread it, I actually miss the dressing up bit: finding a frock and getting all glammed up. One feels so much more special in a cocktail dress with an extra splash of make up on. The last I got to experience this was in October this year for the MAD (mum and dad) blog awards evening, but I can’t even remember the last time before that!
This week I popped into TKMaxx to get some Christmas presents- as I always do when I want to pick up something not bog standard. I spotted row upon row of glamorous evening wear. If I didn’t have Little Man with me and a bump that looks double the size it should, I would’ve tried on a few cocktail dresses just for the feeling.
Being in the store also brought back such fond memories of a day a couple of months ago, when I went to London with handful of other bloggers for a spot of evening wear shopping at TK Maxx for the MAD blog awards, compliments of TK Maxx. (We were given £100, which went surprisingly far- got me a Little Black Dress, a handbag, comfy shoes and a throw) Ok, you say, shopping when someone else foots the bill is always fun. Not true! The same hang ups apply as usual- I’m too fat in this, does this colour really suite me and so on. You know what I’m talking about!
…Except what made this experience fun was that there were a bunch of us girls all looking and trying on different style evening wear, often things we wouldn’t dare to even try on our own. We’d point out dresses and accessories to try for each other, nod vehemently, or shake our heads as everyone showed off their finds. (…’cause shopping in TK Maxx is a bit like embarking on a treasure hunt- there are always fascinating finds, but you have to look.) To a degree, we all ended up with an item (a dress, shoes or jewellery) pushing our comfort zone slightly, but oh-so-glamorous! Boy, we had a ball at the awards ceremony in the results of treasure hunt! Look at some of the pictures of the fun evening here.
I wish I had a party like that to go to for this Christmas too and be able to go shopping with a bunch of girls for a special cocktail dress like we did for the MADs.
In case you are lucky enough and need something fab to wear this party season, definitely check out TK Maxx and take 2-3 girlfriends with you. It is so much fun! (… but make sure you go without kids too or they will get stuck in the toy section and will only budge with a bribe!)
Just so you can’t say I don’t tell you about my secrets:
What’s your favourite store to shop for something special?
(PS Though TK Maxx did treat me to a £100 gift voucher to buy the clothes for the MADs back in September, I was not asked to write this or any other post by TK Maxx. I just like them and would shop there for gifts, shoes and nicer pieces of clothes anyway. I just love the treasure hunt and the inspiration you get there!)
