There’s a big birthday looming in the House-on-the-brink: Little Man is turning 3! … and we have the task of planning a party for the soon to be 3 year old and his 20 (!) little guests.
At this age birthdays are so important to children. My two love them, they pretend to have birthdays almost everyday and sing “Happy birthday” several times a day and make pretend cake on which they blow out the candles. They are forever wrapping up their toys into towels, kitchen roll and giving it as “presents” to us and each other.
Now, I have this vision of creating a dream birthday party for Little Man…on a budget.
When I asked him a few weeks back what cake would he like, he said a “Lightning McQueen cake” without hesitation. (I was surprised that he was so quick to give an answer, because knowing him, I expected that he’s be torn between his heros Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and Lightning McQueen from Cars…Let’s hope he doesn’t change his mind in a weeks’ time! ) We want to surprise him and create a whole theme for the party around Cars.
Are we setting ourselves up for too much hassle? I’m hoping we can pull it off and have fun in the process.
We have just over 2 weeks to organise it.
We are, most likely, going to be holding it at home.
I sent out a request for idea via Twitter a week ago and had some very helpful responses.
- A Lightning McQueen cake is available at most major supermarkets
- For games: make costumes from boxes – attach over shoulders with braces, get kids to paint/race them*
- For decoration: lots of red, black and silver balloons in an arch like at piston cup*
- For food: get trophies filled with jelly, fruit salad or sweeties*
The informal invites have gone out to let friends mark the date in their diaries.
My next task–
Create the invites and hand deliver them or email them across.
Then I will go digging around for more ideas online and get stuck in to organising the party of the year.
